The
school board is working hard to reduce its energy consumption and
greenhouse
gas (GHG) emissions. We ask all students, teachers, and
staff to please support this initiative!
Here a few simple
examples of what you can do to help at school and at home. Become
an
energy efficiency ambassador today!
The hardest part is thinking of it - doing it is easy!
Turning off your computer at the end of the day
10 computers that are left in sleep mode at night for a year will waste enough energy to light 4 family homes!
Tip #1: Turn off all components of your workstation (monitor, computer, printer, etc.) at the end of the day.
Tip #2:
Computer settings can be changed so that it will go into sleep mode
after a specified amount of time. Go to “properties/screen
saver/power options” and choose how long to wait before going into
sleep mode. This change takes 2 or 3 minutes and has immediate
savings that continue day after day.
Tip #3:
If you have a CRT monitor (large, older style), it can consume up to
65% of the total energy of your workstation. You can turn
it off when you leave your desk for more than 15 minutes.
Please note: Screen savers do not decrease power consumption. Their goal
is only to protect the monitor and improve its lifespan.
Tip #4:
If you have a flat panel monitor, it already consumes much less
power than a CRT. Flat panels are much more sensitive to
being turned on and off frequently. Therefore, a screen
saver is sufficient to save energy. There is no problem
with turning off a flat panel at the end of the day though.
